Tarenna asiatica fruits were analysed for the validation of anti-inflammatory effects reported in the ethnobotanical literature. The plant is widely used as a traditional medicine to treat several disorders and diseases such as external ulcers, boils, sores, skin diseases, paralysis, wound healing etc. The anti-inflammatory activity of acetone extract of fruit was also shown by significant (p<0.05, 0.01, 0.001) reduction of paw linear diameter after 4 hours in both carrageenan (5.52 ± 0.21 mm) and egg albumin (4.81 ± 0.37 mm) induced paw oedema in rats at a dose of 200 mg/kg). The study on cotton pellet induced granuloma in rats has shown significant reduction in weight of granuloma (67.52%) by acetone extract of fruit at 200 mg/kg. Hence, it can be concluded that the acetone extract of T. asiatica fruit possesses significant anti-inflammatory effects and can be used as a natural source for anti-inflammatory drug.
