The antimicrobial activity of the rhizome of Curcuma pseudomontana methanolic and essential oil were determined on multi drug resistant human pathogenic bacteria namely, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus and fungi; Candida glabrata, Candida albicans, Cladopsorium sphaerospermum and Aspergillus fumigates. In vitro antibacterial and antifungal activity was screened by agar disc diffusion method. Thus, results showed broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against bacteria but some cannot be showed its activity against the fungi. The essential oil extract leads more effective on the bacteria and fungi than solvent extraction. The fact that the C.pseudomontana rhizome was active against multi drug resistant pathogens that it can be a source of very potent antibiotic substances that can be used against drug resistant microbes. The presence of these compounds in C. pseudomontana corroborates the antimicrobial activity against resistant strains. It is concluded that C.pseudomontana could be a potent source of active antimicrobial agents.
