The plant Abrus precatorious Linn. (family:fabaceae ) is known to possess varied medicinal properties.Aqueous extract of abrus precatorious leaves were administered to experimental rats at doses of 125 and 250 mg/kg p.o. Hydrochlorothiazide (10 mg/kg) was used as positive control in study. The diuretic effect of the extract was evaluated by measuring urine volume. Urine volume was significantly increased by the high dose of aqueous extract in comparison to control group. The diuretic effect of the extracts was comparable to that of the reference standard (Hydrochlorothiazide) from this study we can conclude that aqueous extracts of abrus precatorious produced notable diuretic effect which appeared to be comparable to that produced by the reference diuretic Hydrochlorothiazide. The present study provides a basis for explaining the folkloric use of abrus precatorious as a diuretic agent.
