The aim of the study is to determine the effect of fake paracetamol syrup on brain, heart, kidney, lung and ileum of rats. This animal study was carried out in accordance with national and international laws and Guidelines for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals in Biomedical Research Institutes of Health (revised 1985). Twenty-one female Wistar rats (200 g) were randomly distributed into 3 groups comprising of 7 rats per group. The first group was treated with 90 mg/kg of fake Bonadabe; the second group on the other hand was administered with 90 mg/kg BW of genuine Bonadabe® paracetamol while the third group were administered with distilled water and served as the control. Each treatment lasted for a period of 21 days. Histopathology assessment of the tissues was carried out using haematoxylin and eosin (H & E) technique. Results of the study did not reveal any abnormality for rats administered with genuine drug whereas changes in the histologic features of brain (congestion of some foci on the meninges); heart (marked coronary congestion); lung (showing severe infiltration of the alveoli); and ileum (severe congestion of the mucosa) were noted in fake drug administered rats. While the devastating effects of fake paracetamol syrup in children are usually linked to abnormality in hepato-renal system, these results suggest that the damaging effects of fake drug may extend to other tissues in the body.
