Use of three or more drugs for the treatment of a disease is called “Polypharmacy”. As the no. of medications being taken by a given patient increases, the risk of Drug interactions in that patient also increases. The main objective of this was to study the polypharmacy induced drug interactions in the prescriptions of surgery wards at RMMCH. The study was a prospective observational study carried out by taking 100 prescriptions from the surgery department of RMMCH during a study period of two years i.e., from April 2010 to April 2012. The drug interactions can be assessed through Micromedex, NFI & BNF. Polypharmacy was observed in 95 (95%) prescriptions and drug interaction was observed in 85 (85%) prescriptions. Our study reported that the drug-drug interactions were more common in the elderly patients since they were talking many medications for the management of their chronic disorders. Clinical pharmacist should review the regular medication chart to discontinue unnecessary medication, will reduce the poly pharmacy and inappropriate medication use.
