In the present study, the methanolic extract of Vigna radiata (Fabaceae) were investigated for anti-inflammatory activity by HRBC method. The preventation of hypo tonicity induced HRBC membrane lysis was taken a measure of anti-inflammatory activity.These extracts show biphasic effects. Their activities were compared with standard drug diclofenac.Vigna radiata a widely growing plant has been reported to possess number of medicinal properties. The various parts of Vigna radiata such as root, leaves and seeds are documented to possess various medicinal properties. Animal studies were performed using Carrageenan induced paw edema principle in albino Wistar rats. The anti inflammatory activity of the methanolic leaf extract of Vigna radiata was investigated with experimental animal models using the carrageenan-induced paw oedema, leukocyte migration and granuloma air pouch tests in rats. The extract (100, 200 or 400 mg/kg) at 3 h post-treatment caused a significant (p<0.05) reduction in the paw oedema in rats. The effect of the extract was most pronounced at the dose of 400 mg/kg and was higher than that of standard drug diclofenac sodium. The findings of the study indicate that the methanolic extract of Vigna radiata possesses anti inflammatory activity which is probably related to the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. This is a possible rationale for its folkloric use as an anti-inflammatory agent.
